Review Never Yours
Oh my goodness, Never Yours was a whirlwind! From the very first page, I was completely swept away by S. Hall-Wood's captivating blend of Victorian gothic and supernatural intrigue. The world-building was phenomenal; she painted such a vivid picture of Victorian England, but with this deliciously dark, magical twist that kept me guessing at every turn. The oppressive atmosphere of the era, the societal constraints placed upon women like Jane, it all felt so real and palpable, making the fantastical elements even more compelling.
Jane herself is an absolute powerhouse of a protagonist. She's fiery, independent, and incredibly resilient, even when faced with the brutal realities of her arranged marriage and the looming threat of vampires. Watching her journey from a somewhat naive debutante to a powerful witch, embracing her true strength and discovering her hidden abilities, was truly empowering. I loved her vulnerability but also her fierce determination; she's the kind of character you root for from beginning to end, even when things get incredibly messy (and they do!).
The supporting characters are equally well-developed. The coven of witches, in particular, added a layer of warmth and camaraderie that beautifully contrasted the dark and dangerous world they inhabited. Their bond felt genuine and powerful, and their collective strength was both inspiring and terrifying. Even the antagonists were richly crafted, giving them motivations and complexities that went beyond simple villainy. They weren't just evil for evil's sake; they had their own reasons, adding another layer of depth to the already fascinating plot.
The romance aspect, while present, isn't the central focus, which I appreciated. It felt natural and organic to the story, never overshadowing Jane's journey of self-discovery and her fight for survival. The pacing was excellent; the story kept me hooked from start to finish with a constant stream of thrilling reveals and unexpected twists. I found myself completely absorbed, unable to put the book down until I'd devoured the entire thing. There were moments that made me gasp, others that had me biting my nails, and others still that filled me with a sense of hopeful anticipation.
One of the aspects I particularly enjoyed was the author's unique take on vampires and their relationship with witches. It wasn't just a simple good versus evil dichotomy; there were fascinating nuances and complexities to their interactions, adding a refreshing layer to a well-trodden genre. The subtle yet significant conversations about the patriarchy and the restrictions placed upon women in Victorian society also added a thoughtful and relevant dimension to the narrative.
In short, Never Yours is a must-read for anyone who enjoys dark fantasy, gothic novels, or powerful female characters. It's a thrilling, captivating, and incredibly well-written story that left me completely satisfied and eagerly anticipating the next installment in the Prophecy series. I wholeheartedly recommend it!
